Why is this important?

Household income is the most significant factor in determining its members' ability to meet their basic needs, including food, housing, and childcare. Moreover, low household income increases the likelihood that a household will be dependent on programs and social services that provide rent or food assistance. Household income also impacts the health and educational attainment of families and the ability to afford quality housing in safe neighborhoods. Children growing up in households with low household incomes are at greater risk of reduced academic success and poor health. Median household income can be used to assess issues of equity across geographies and disparate communities.
