Why is this important?
The health of Portland’s regional economy is affected by the health of the industries that comprise it. Some industries are naturally more cyclical than others—their employment fluctuates sharply with national business cycles. Some industries are young and growing; others are older established industries that may be losing employment both regionally and nationally. While regional economies tend to specialize in certain industries that influence their regional identities, industrial diversity can reduce the negative effects of business cycles and industrial life cycles.
